Me and Mt. St. Helen’s

Thirty years ago today I heard Mt. St. Helen’s blow it’s top. From a state away, the explosion served to encapsulate a moment. There I sat, in front of a mirrored wall at the base of the wrought iron spiral staircase that led to my room, where I watched Solid Gold (and later, the wedding of Charles and Diana) on a 10-inch black and white TV, where I taped magazine pictures of models to the wall and learned to measure the circumference of my thighs.

Did you hear it too?

No, but I sure remember the red sky for about 6 months afterward. We’ve been there since, and it’s still like a moonscape. Some regrowth, but mostly thousands of dead trees, all laying in the same direction. And that lake that sloshed clear to one side of its basin, collected the trees on the opposite hillside, then sloshed back into place – still has all those trees floating on the top. It’s really cool, and really sad.

As for Solid Gold and Charles and Di? You betcha. I dated a guy whose life ambition was to be a solid gold dancer. Yeah, that shoulda been my first hint…

We just watched a documentary on it within the last few weeks. It was very interesting. It went with the theme that life will find a way.

OMG Solid Gold LOL Now that’s a flashback. I remember Charles and Di’s wedding for sure but mostly I remember being glued to the tv in shock over her accident.

You had me hooked with volcanos, and thigh sizes, and pictures of models, not to mention spiral staircases, but what the heck is Solid Gold. Enquiring minds want to know.

that wasn’t Mt. St. Helen. That was my mother yelling she was going to cancel my Bat-Mitzvah b/c she couldn’t find her car keys.

No, but I didn’t missed Solid Gold!
I do, however, have a little glass bottle of grey ash from Mt. St. Helen’s eruption that my Dad aquirred when he lived there. Wouldn’t you like to see it? :)

  6. Um….. don’t want to brag, but uh…. got my OWN jar of ash thank you very much.
