Hey, ‘Sup Man

At back to school night I greeted one of my son’s friends: Hey, Dude, what’s up? My sixth grader averted his eyes and we walked away in silence.

Mom, what have I told you about calling my friends Dude?

Um… Is this a trick question?

I told you not to do it.

Oh. Okay. What should I say?

Just say, hi, how’s it going?

Just then we spotted a neighbor girl.

Here’s your chance. Practice on Mackenzie.

I obeyed: Hi, how’s it going?

Not like that.

How then?

Okay, don’t say that.

What am I allowed to say?

Just say: Hey, ’sup man.

Sweet.

How funny…. I can’t wait to have those kinds of conversations.

Yeah, I love it when my kids revise my script. Especially since they’re SO good at communicating with MY peers.

When I was a tween, my dad would pretend to be foreign, like Chinese, and speak in this awful accent if we ever asked him to not talk to our friends. So we stopped asking.

I still cringe when I think of all the stuff my parents did to ruin my life- like the night they took our whole family to DQ after moving all day. They made us sit down TOGETHER and EAT at the main hang-out in town. No make-up! Dad looking particularly skanky! I could’ve died! Could still die!!!

This is super funny! I’ll be taking my 5 year old to Kindergarten on Monday- I’m sure this is a little peek into my future!
