Feeding the Family on $100 All Week
This is Day 3 of the $25 Grocery Challenge and today was the first day we had to deal with the after school hunger invasion. My kids go through the kitchen eating all kinds of things from 3-5 every weekday afternoon. My son’s favorite thing to eat is tortillas with cheese melted in the microwave. At $7 or more for a bag of cheese, that was simply not an option this week.
Today they munched on saltines and two of the single serve string cheese sticks I bought (couldn’t afford the whole bag). I let my daughter eat one of the apples. And we all had some of the bean dip I made yesterday.
Bean dip? Oh yeah I’m pretty proud of that one! I made a bag of black beans to use later in the week with a stir fry and a took some of them and mashed with a little oil and garlic salt. Voila – bean dip.

Have you considered buying cheese in block form and grating it yourself? It is far cheaper.
Do you shop at TRader Joes? Does it make much of a difference?
I should totally try this.
Sarah – I thought that too, about the cheese, but my store brand grated was a better deal than the block. Part of the problem with the limited budget is not being able to take advantage of ‘bulk’ deals.
Bern – *sigh* We don’t have Trader Joes. We do have Aldi, but I did all my shopping at the Big W because it was more convenient.
Darius!!! Yes, yes, you must do this! And blog it for all of us so we can learn to eat fabulous for less. The thing is that it can totally be done, we just have to adjust our thinking. The true hardship is for people who may be living in their car or otherwise just completely unable to cook at all. We who have time and resources to cook food are in good shape.
Another big issue is Diabetes. I’d love to see a diabetic blogger tackle this food budget. Know anyone?
