Date Night Anyone?

My humor piece, Chasing Date Night sort of started everything for me. I entered it into a contest at a writer’s conference in 2006 and placed 3rd. That gave me wild confidence. Chasing Date Night was the first thing I published online at the old whoisisabella, and the first After the Bubbly column to run in Peekaboo magazine.

It’s gotten so much positive feedback that I’ve been asked to launch a new column all about how to have great date night. Ack! Does anyone out there have some great ideas for date night? I’m begging y’all to tell me things that have and have not worked for you. Also, I’d love to know what stupid date night advice drives you nuts. And, on a more specific note – if you have any suggestions for great lunch date restaurants in NWA, please let me know!

Thanks in advance for all your brilliant comments!

I’m sorry, but I can’t remember the last time I had a date night without a toddler! I guess I will need to read your tips when you get them published! :)
I did read your April Peekaboo article that I found while waiting at my eye Dr!

scrap fairy – I’m sorry to hear that you’re lacking in the date night department. I’ll try to help you out with that. Thanks for reading me at the doctor! That is so fun to hear. I need to get out and pick up my copy. What did I write about again….

For our 5th anniversary, my husband and I did something a little unorthodox. After dropping off our then one-year-old at his aunt and uncle’s, we ate at a nice restaurant, changed clothes in the van, then went to Locomotion in NWA. Kind of a cool place for adult “kids” as well as real ones. We had a great time playing miniature golf and playing some video games-I even rode the mechanical bull. It was still okay being around kids because we weren’t responsible for any of them!

We usually enjoy attaching a walk at a park or a browsing in a bookstore to a night out at a restaurant. We don’t get date nights often, so when we do, we like to take a few hours. It is not much fun when we are pressed for time, so we usually do it when grandparents are in town, or we are there so we don’t feel like we have to rush home.

We both also enjoy occasional “date nights” at home. Sometimes we put our now two-year old to bed a little early and let him look at a book until he falls asleep while we pop popcorn and watch a rented movie.

Advice about date night I hate: When people say, “You should really try to do this regularly, like once a week,” as if we all have a nanny on call.

Ya-it’s nice to open a magazine and see a familiar name. It’s like I know a local celebrity :)

Scout, that’s a good point about taking a long time for date night. And I know what you mean about the weekly thing – who does that?

We use lunches as our standing date “nights”. Emelias on Dickson Street and the Greenhouse Grill are two of our favorite places to go.
