Be That Mom
My daughter is quite direct in expressing her needs. She once made a sign for my desk. It reads: “Be nice. Be cool. Cook good.” As a mothering mandate, it’s pretty good.
Last week was stormy in my part of the world. The seven day forecast showed dark clouds and thunderbolts on every single day. The Girl put her request in on Sunday night:
“Can you pick me up from the bus stop this week?”
“If it’s raining? Sure. I could do that.”
“Yes, Mom, you can do it. Just pretend you’re one of those [insert air quotes] caring moms.”
Feel the love?

HAHAHA love the air-quotes! How old is your daughter btw?
The little pill-meister. My kids will drop “but that was back when our mother loved us” into conversations with their teachers, people we go to church with, whatever.
Needless to say, when I was a boy, we walked home in the pooring rain with razor blades in our shoes while our mothers cut switches to beat it with when we got home. It didn’t make us better people, but it gave us a good reason not to attend her funeral later on.
My little pill meister is just about ten. Just you wait, Amber, just you wait. Being a terrible parent is an acquired skill.
Sometimes I think I’m already there!
